KGIS extends THANKS to MPC's Gretchen Beal

We have learned that Gretchen Beal will be retiring from her position of Director of Information Services with MPC effective Dec. 16, 2010. Gretchen has been with MPC for more than 37 years, and has been involved with mapping –related activities since KGIS’ inception back in 1985. She was especially instrumental in establishing a standardized addressing ordinance for all of Knox County, and understands the many intricacies of the subdivision and street naming workflows. Thank you Gretchen for your years of service, and we wish you the fondest wishes for great times ahead.

KAT System Map honored for Top Cartography

The 2010 Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) System Map was honored at the annual TNGIC East Tennessee Regional GIS Conference. The map, produced by MPC GIS Specialist Ryan Justice, received first place for category of Best Cartographic Presentation.  The map portion of KAT’s System Map brochure features a view of each of KAT’s 25 fixed routes set on basemap data from the KGIS database.  It also included the use of an innovative hillshading technique pioneered by National Park Service Cartographers that creates photo realistic terrain features.

A unique public-private partnership was formed to produce KAT’s system map.  Knoxville-based Hornsby Brand Design, which was responsible for KAT’s rebranding that accompanied the opening of the new Knoxville Station Transit Center, created the graphic portions of the brochure.  Hornsby also provided parameters relating to size, fonts and colors which MPC staff incorporated into the final map design.

The system map, along with 25 fixed route service pamphlets also produced by MPC, can be viewed via KAT’s website at www.katbus.com.

Congratulation to Ryan!
